Three GP practices will operate alongside a Sainsburys store in Burnham Road
A new medical centre serving South Woodham Ferrers is due to be completed next summer, it has been announced.
Three GP practices will operate from the new centre in Burnham Road as part of an ongoing development, that also includes a new 45,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s supermarket.
The new health centre will be a state of the art 16,000 sq ft facility which brings the three local GP surgeries together under one roof. The building will span two floors and could potentially allow for a dentist and pharmacy as well as additional facilities to eradicate patients having to travel long distances to clinics.
A spokesman for Mid Essex clincial commissioning group (CCG) said: “We have agreed with the company behind a new mixed-use development in South Woodham Ferrers that NHS facilities can go on the site.
“This offers a great opportunity for people living in and around the town to get more of their NHS services closer to home. All three of the GP practices in South Woodham will share the premises, enabling further partnership working between them, and community healthcare services from Provide Community Interest Company will be based there too.
“There are real advantages for patient care in putting more healthcare professionals under one roof, so we are also talking to mental health trusts and others about whether appropriate services they offer can also be provided from the site.
“This joint working will make the facility what we call a Live Well Hub – a one-stop shop where the community can receive more joined-up care. We recently met patient groups in the town to discuss the plans and how they will help local people to live well.”
The supermarket, which has not been given a completion date, includes a café, in store bakery and petrol station and is expected to bring 320 jobs to the area.
The development will also benefit from improvements along Burnham Road in which it resides and improvements to transport links and pedestrianised areas to ensure safe access to visitors.
