Treating serious health conditions, like high blood pressure (hypertension), may mean taking prescribed medicines to keep you well and prevent future risk to your health. Even if you feel fine – or you’re experiencing side effects – stopping or skipping medicines can make your condition worse.
In our latest blog, Clinical Pharmacist Sofiea Azad explains why it’s important to:
- follow the instructions on how to take any prescribed medicines
- speak to a healthcare professional if you are worried
- book a medicine review to make sure your treatment is working for you.
Why it matters
Many long-term conditions, including high blood pressure, do not always cause noticeable symptoms. This can make it tempting to stop taking medicines if you feel well, are experiencing side effects, or are unsure they are helping. However, stopping or changing medicines without medical advice can increase the risk of serious health problems, such as heart attack or stroke.
If you have concerns about your treatment, help is available. A GP or practice pharmacist can talk through any side effects, adjust your dose if needed, or explore alternative options to make sure your treatment is safe, effective and right for you.
