Trusted advice, closer to home: how pharmacies are supporting winter health

As the colder months set in, many of us start to feel the effects – sniffles, coughs, sore throats and winter bugs. But did you know your local pharmacy can help you manage many of these without needing a GP appointment?

In our latest blog, Essex community pharmacist Bhavesh Patel explains how pharmacies can support you and your family to stay well this winter.

Pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals who can:

  • Provide expert advice and treatments for minor illnesses such as earaches, sore throats and urinary tract infections (UTIs).
  • Offer flu vaccinations and blood pressure checks.
  • Support long-term conditions like asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure – especially important during the colder months.
  • Give guidance on healthy lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking or managing your weight.

Your winter health checklist

Visit your pharmacy if you need help with:

☑️ Coughs, colds or sore throats
☑️ Ear infections or urinary tract infections (UTIs)
☑️ Tummy upsets and minor aches or pains
☑️ Managing your asthma or inhaler use
 ☑️ Checking your blood pressure
☑️ Getting your NHS flu vaccination
☑️ Advice on healthy living and staying well

Many pharmacies are open evenings and weekends, and you can usually visit without an appointment. You can even have a private consultation if you prefer to discuss your symptoms in confidence.
