Helping your child’s Super Body fight off bugs

Every parent knows the worry when a child comes down with a cough, cold, or earache. But most of these are caused by viruses, and your child’s Super Body is usually strong enough to fight them off.

Antibiotics only work against infections caused by bacteria. If they’re used for viruses, or when they aren’t needed, they can stop working properly when your child really does need them.

In Southend, children aged 0–9 are prescribed antibiotics almost twice as often as the national average, with other areas of Essex not far behind – something we’re working hard to change.

So, what can you do when your child feels poorly?

  • Try care at home with fluids, rest, and child-appropriate pain relief.
  • Visit your local pharmacy for expert advice.
  • Contact your GP or NHS 111 if symptoms aren’t improving.

Trust your child’s Super Body — it’s more powerful than you think.
