New ways your GP practice is speeding up care

We know how frustrating it can be trying to get through to your GP practice first thing in the morning. That’s why practices across mid and south Essex are introducing new technology and ways of working to help you:

  • be seen more quickly
  • get the right help from the right healthcare professional, and;
  • skip the long waits on the phone.

These changes are all about making access to care simpler, faster, and less stressful.

Total triage – helping you get the right care, first time

Total triage involves screening all patient requests before being directed to the right care. It helps healthcare teams to get a full picture of a health issue by getting as much information as possible from patients before booking appointments with the right healthcare professional, at the right time.

GP practices across mid and south Essex are increasingly using total triage to make sure every patient request is assessed and directed to the most appropriate care – whether that’s a GP, nurse, pharmacist, another service, or self-care.

No matter how you get in touch – online, by phone or in person – the practice team will make sure you’re supported by the right professional, in the right place, based on your clinical need.

More practices are adopting total triage each month, so please check your local surgery’s website or noticeboard for the latest updates.

Online consultations – skip the 8am call queue

Most practices now offer online consultation tools. These systems, that can vary from practice to practice, let you submit a request at a time that suits you and help free up the phones for those who need to speak directly to someone. Online consultation tools can also be accessed via your NHS App.

Coming in October 2025, you’ll also be able to:

  • submit non-urgent appointment requests
  • ask about medications
  • manage other admin requests.

Smarter phone systems – fewer queues, better service

New cloud-based phone systems are also making it easier to contact your GP. These systems offer:

  • call-back options (no more long waits)
  • faster, clearer call handling
  • a better overall experience.

These changes are designed to make accessing care simpler, quicker and more convenient for you.

Need help or have questions?

GP surgeries are adding new services all the time so it’s worthwhile checking with your own surgery about the services they offer. These services are shared on your practice’s website, or you can speak to a member of the reception team if you have any questions about specific services.
