Hospital team first in Essex to get ‘gold-standard’ care recognition
The specialist respiratory rehabilitation team at Southend Hospital is now one of only 25 services across the country and the first in Essex to receive ‘gold-standard’ care recognition from the Royal College of Physicians.
For patients, it means they can be reassured they’re being cared for by a nationally recognised team using gold-standard practices that meet the British Thoracic Society Quality Standard.
Hospitals make ‘light’ work of energy savings
The future’s bright at Southend and Basildon hospitals thanks to a light replacement scheme that will help improve hospital environments and save money.
The Trust have been awarded almost £3 million by NHS England to replace old and inefficient lighting at the two hospitals, with energy efficient LED lights.
Cancer appeal celebrates beating its original target by over £300,000
Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation’s Spotlight Radiotherapy Appeal has officially closed after reaching £920,000 and exceeding its original £600,000.
Honouring the extraordinary generosity of its supporters, a special event was held, bringing together trustees, charity staff, supporters and radiotherapy department colleagues.

In Focus: Hospital staff make Netflix debut in new medical documentary
Staff from Broomfield Hospital and Southend Hospital have appeared on Netflix in a new factual TV series, joining the platform’s growing collection of real-life medical documentaries, with a spotlight on the London Major Trauma System, its patients, and the professionals working to save lives.
Southend ED team and Broomfield’s Plastics team are featured as one of several hospitals that appear over the six-part series.
