This week (9–15 June) is Carers Week – a time to recognise and celebrate the millions of people who quietly put someone else’s needs before their own.
Here in Essex, we estimate there are at least 124,000 unpaid carers – though the true number is likely even higher. You may be an unpaid carer if you look after, help, or support someone who couldn’t manage day-to-day without your assistance. Many people do not realise they are carers.
Do you help someone with their shopping, manage a loved one’s medication, or support a friend with their mental health? If so, you may be an unpaid carer – and you are not alone.
Caring can happen at any age and for many reasons – whether supporting someone with a long-term condition, disability, illness, or mental health need.
We know caring can feel isolating at times, but support is available here in Essex. From practical advice and emotional support to opportunities to connect with other local carers – you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.
As an unpaid carer, you have important rights and may be entitled to financial help such as Carer’s Allowance, workplace flexibility, and a carer’s assessment from your local council.
Throughout this week, a range of events, support groups, and webinars are taking place across Essex – designed for unpaid carers and the professionals who support them.
