“The Role of Governors in Our Trust

Governors play a vital part in the governance of our Trust, bringing the views and interests of our members into the heart of strategic decision-making. As part of the Council of Governors, they:

  • Represent the views of public, staff, and stakeholder members;
  • Appoint the Trust Chair and Non-Executive Directors;
  • Hold the Non-Executive Directors to account for the performance of the Board;
  • Support and promote the Trust’s strategy;
  • Contribute to shaping the Trust’s future direction.

While Governors work closely with the Board of Directors, they are not involved in daily operational management, such as staffing, budgets, or service delivery decisions.

Types of Governors

The Council of Governors includes:

  • Public Governors – Elected by members of the public to represent local constituencies.
  • Staff Governors – Elected by Trust staff from different professional areas.
  • Appointed Governors – Nominated by key stakeholders such as local authorities and community organisations.

Meetings and Engagement

The Council meets four times a year, in addition to an Annual Members’ Meeting and public forums. All meetings are open to the public, encouraging transparency and community engagement.

If you are interested in becoming a Governor we are hosting several Governor workshops online. Please email epunft.membership@nhs.net  with your name, contact details. The online workshops’ details will be given to you; they are between 29 April and 15 May.
