We are pleased to share that GP practices across mid and south Essex delivered almost seven million appointments in 2024, representing a 5% increase from the previous year. Our region continues to exceed the national average for face-to-face appointments, with 75% of consultations conducted in person.
To improve access to healthcare, we have expanded our services beyond traditional GP appointments. Patients can now self-refer to various services, including eye care and physiotherapy, and access healthcare advice through the NHS App. Our local pharmacies have also provided over 99,000 consultations through the Pharmacy First service last year.
Additionally, all GP practices in our region now feature digital phone systems, making it easier for patients to manage their appointments and reduce waiting times.
Breaking ground on mid and south Essex’s third Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC)
We are delighted to announce that construction has started on Braintree’s new Community Diagnostic Centre. Opening in late 2025 at Braintree Community Hospital, this NHS facility will provide faster access to essential medical tests and scans for local residents.
The centre will offer CT and MRI scans, ultrasounds, X-rays, blood tests, and heart and lung diagnostic tests. Operating seven days a week, it will handle approximately 75,000 appointments each year, significantly reducing waiting times for local patients.
This development is part of a wider NHS initiative to bring healthcare closer to our communities, with similar centres being developed in Thurrock, Pitsea, and Southend.
