This month, we’re highlighting two critical health awareness topics: Lung Cancer Awareness Month and Men’s Health Month. As we focus on health and wellbeing, early detection and regular self-checks play an essential role in managing our health. Read on for expert insights from our clinical leads, Dr Sanjeev Maskara and Dr Deepak Kumar, who share practical advice on identifying early symptoms.
The ABCD of Lung Cancer
In his latest blog, Dr Sanjeev Maskara, a local Macmillan GP, explains the “ABCD” method for recognising lung cancer symptoms early. Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, but early awareness can make a real difference. Here’s what the “ABCD” of lung cancer stands for:
- A – Appetite loss
- B – Breathlessness and/or blood
- C – Coughing and/or chest pain
- D – Difficulty swallowing or difference in voice
For those aged 55 to 75 who are smokers or former smokers, the Targeted Lung Health Check programme offers lung health assessments that can catch potential issues early. Since it began in 2020, the programme has helped detect and treat over 163 lung cancers across mid and south Essex, with 70% of those cases caught at an early stage. If you or someone you know qualifies, consider taking part—early checks can truly save lives.
Got Balls? Here’s How to Check ‘Em
November is Men’s Health Month, a time to talk openly about health issues that men may find difficult to discuss. Dr Deepak Kumar, Alliance Cancer Lead, discusses the importance of self-checks for testicular and prostate cancer.
Testicular cancer can affect anyone with testicles and is often treatable when detected early. Find out how to perform a self-exam to check for lumps, swelling, or changes in size and shape.
For prostate cancer—the most common cancer among men in the UK—Dr Kumar highlights symptoms to watch for, including changes in urination patterns and discomfort. Early action can make all the difference.
