Altruism: The Secret to a Happier You

August is a month for reflection and renewal. What better way to start than by exploring the power of altruism?

Often misunderstood as selfless to a fault, altruism is actually a win-win situation. It’s about performing acts of kindness without expecting anything in return. But the benefits to the giver are often overlooked.

What is Altruism?
Altruism is the principle of selfless concern for the well-being of others. It’s about putting someone else’s needs before your own. This could be anything from volunteering your time to donating to charity, or simply offering a helping hand to a neighbour.

The Altruism-Mental Health Connection
It might seem counterintuitive, but helping others can significantly boost your own mental health. Here’s how:
 * Increased Happiness: Studies show that performing acts of kindness releases endorphins, the body’s natural mood elevators.
 * Reduced Stress: Focusing on the needs of others can help take your mind off your own worries.
 * Boosted Self-Esteem: Knowing you’re making a positive impact on someone’s life can do wonders for your self-worth.
 * Stronger Social Connections: Volunteering or helping others often involves interacting with new people, expanding your social circle.

You don’t have to make grand gestures to reap the rewards of altruism. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Strike it Lucky! Social Night

Our July social event was a resounding success! A whopping 33 of us gathered at Hollywood Bowl for an evening of friendly competition and fun.
The teams battled it out on the lanes. Whether you were a seasoned pro or a bowling newbie, there was plenty of laughter and cheering to go around. It was fantastic to catch up with everyone in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along – it was a night to remember!

A Sun-Kissed Success: Our July Beach Bonanza Personal Challenge.
Over 20 of us basked in the glorious sunshine last month for our July Personal Challenge: a fun-filled beach day! The atmosphere was electric as we soaked up the rays, laughed, and enjoyed each other’s company.

From the moment we arrived, the energy was contagious. Paddleboards glided across the water and frisbees danced on the breeze. Those with a more creative flair showcased their sandcastle-building skills, crafting impressive structures that defied gravity.

But it wasn’t just about the physical activities. It was a chance to unwind, relax, and connect with nature. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore provided a soothing backdrop as we picnicked and chatted.

We’re already looking forward to our next Personal Challenge. 

Basildon Pride: Sat September 7th
Last year, we were thrilled to partner with Basildon Pride and created a calm, safe space for everyone at the Chill Out Zone. It was such a hit, they’ve invited us back! Whether you’re looking for a place to relax with friends or family, or just need a break from the festivities, come visit our zone.

Join us for one of our three 5k Fun Walk FUNdraisers, in Basildon, Billericay or Wickford. Dress up, hold an egg and spoon, maybe a three leg walk, this is a fun walk whilst we collect donations to support the work of Motivated Minds.

Monday:  10.00 am – 5:00 pm (closed bank holidays)
