Content originally from Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System.
As a local GP for over 18 years, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that the colder months can have on our wellbeing.
Over the coming weeks you will receive fortnightly emails with expert advice and useful information and practical tips on how to keep you and your loved ones safe, well and warm this winter.
Here’s a sneak peak of some of the topics we’ll be covering:
- The secret to living well with a long-term respiratory condition.
- How to improve strength and balance and prevent trips and falls.
- How to reduce stress, anxiety and loneliness.
- A practical guide to saving money if you have a long-term health condition.
- The best ways to avoid UTIs (urine infections) and stay hydrated.
In this first e-newsletter, I want to start by sharing the easiest ways to avoid winter illness and stay healthy and happy.
![]() | Seasonal vaccinations For some, flu or COVID-19 can be very dangerous and even life-threatening. Flu and COVID-19 vaccines reduce the risk of serious illness in colder months. |
Staying warm Cold temperatures can weaken the immune system, making us more susceptible to infections like the flu and colds. Staying warm supports the body’s ability to fight off illnesses. If you or someone you know is struggling to afford heating to keep their homes warm, Warm Homes Essex has some great advice and information that can help reduce energy costs and impact on the environment. You’ll find a range of government approved schemes that could also help. If, like me you enjoy the warm comfort of a hot water bottle, please be careful. Using old hot water bottles can pose a risk of leaks or cracks, potentially causing nasty burns. |
Please also take care when using electric blankets. Visit the Essex County Fire and Rescue service website for some great advice.
How to keep active and well in the winter months
When it’s cold and dark outside, the temptation to skip exercise is strong. But staying active can uplift your mood and keep you fit. Moderate exercise can even strengthen your immune system and lower your risk of seasonal illnesses. Find out about excellent local initiatives from Active Essex that are free to all and information about exercising if you have long term health conditions.
Further information will follow in the coming weeks.
