Accessing healthcare services during industrial action

Content originally from Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System.

As you may be already aware, junior doctors have announced 96-hours of continuous industrial action from Friday 11th to the Tuesday 15th of August 2023. During this period, our local NHS services will be under added pressure. I want to take a moment to provide you with some guidance and advice on navigating your healthcare needs during these challenging times.

1. A gentle reminder about A&E departments

Our Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments are there to help people with serious or life-threatening conditions. If you turn up to A&E with a minor issue during this period, you are very likely to be signposted to alternative services. Please be sensible about using emergency services.

2. Preparing in advance

Where possible, it is essential to prepare for any medical needs you or your family might have as early as possible. If you rely on regular medications, please ensure you have an adequate supply to last you through the industrial action period.

I always advise keeping a basic first aid kit and some essential medications at home. Paracetamol, ibuprofen, antiseptic creams – and a few other essentials can be beneficial for minor ailments. Remember, it’s not always about the brand; non-branded medicines can be just as effective and often more cost-effective.

3. GP practices

The absence of junior doctors means that our GP practices might be affected. We understand the value of every call, every appointment – and every concern. Your patience and understanding will significantly help our hardworking teams prioritise care efficiently.

4. Urgent health help

If you require urgent health advice, please use NHS 111 online or simply dial 111. Their teams will assess your symptoms and guide you to the best course of action. Whether it’s healthcare advice, booking an appointment, or sending an ambulance – they’re equipped to assist.

5. Mental health matters

If you or a loved one need help during a mental health crisis, adults can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. For our residents under 18, the direct line for urgent support is 0800 995 1000.

6. Protecting the vulnerable

If you’ve recently experienced symptoms like diarrhoea or vomiting, please avoid visiting health settings or care homes. Such illnesses spread rapidly and can have severe repercussions for already ill patients.

In conclusion, these times highlight the importance of community and understanding. Together, as residents and healthcare providers, we can navigate this period with resilience and care.
