We spend a third of our life sleeping, but the quality of your sleep can matter, as we’ve all had times when we find it hard to fall asleep, or we wake in the night leaving us feeling tired and unable to cope the way we normally do. Insomnia is when sleep issues become a regular problem, which can last months or even years.
Why it’s important to get good quality sleep
It’s only recently that we have really understood the link between sleep and poor physical and mental health. Studies shows the wide-ranging effect sleep deprivation can have on us including anxiety, depression and low mood, as well as obesity and high blood pressure.
Fortunately, there’re are changes to improve our quality of sleep, by looking at the psychological, physical and lifestyle issues.

What you can do to get a good night’s sleep from Every Mind Matter:
- Try to keep regular sleep hours – Going to bed when you feel tired and getting up at the same time helps teach your body to sleep better. Try to avoid napping where possible.
- Confront sleeplessness – If you’re lying awake unable to sleep, don’t force it. Get up and do something relaxing for a bit and return to bed when you feel sleepier.
- Create a restful environment – Dark, quiet and cool environments can make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. Watch this video for tips on how to sleep better.
- Write down your worries – If you often lie awake worrying about tomorrow, set aside time before bed to make a list for the next day. This can help put your mind at rest.
- Move more, sleep better – Being active can help you sleep better. These videos can get you going but remember to avoid vigorous activity near bedtime if it affects your sleep.
- Put down the pick-me-ups – Caffeine and alcohol can stop you falling asleep and prevent deep sleep, so try to cut down close to bedtime.
